I believe that change and clarity both begin with

I believe that change and clarity both begin with curiosity.

What does that actually mean, you ask?

Consider any time you’ve made a change, no matter how big or how small… it could be a change of hairstyle, reading a new style of book, switching jobs, moving to a new city. All of these changes begin with an inkling. A wondering. A moment of curiosity. And curiosity leads to a moment of change, or a decision not to make that change (aka - clarity).

What IF it doesn’t have to be this way?

What IF that thing I’ve always believed, doesn’t actually align for me anymore?

What IF that guilt I’m so quick to heap on myself, is not serving me or those around me?

What IF this thing I’m feeling is normal and okay?

Something I frequently ask of clients in moments when we are exploring something in a session is this question:

Would it be okay if for a moment we just got curious together about that feeling/experience/reaction/behaviour?

It’s a truly life changing question because it has the power to shift you from judgment to a tiny bit of self-aware spaciousness.

It moves you from thoughts like:

That feeling is stupid → I wonder what that feeling is trying to tell me?

I always do that thing I hate → I wonder what barriers are in the way of me making a change?

I’m a “bad mom” → I wonder what my values are as a mother?

Do you see how powerful that shift can be?

I work with a lot of incredible momma’s. And som

I work with a lot of incredible momma’s. And something I’ve see again and again, is this battle they have between showing up for their family OR showing up for themselves.

They sit across from me in sessions and share how exhausted they feel and how they’ve lost touch with who they are outside of their role as “mom”. A role that is so important.

When I ask them about their own needs, a lot of the time they get this blank look as if it’s the first moment they’ve considered their own needs in a long time.

There is a lot of pressure on women. Especially on mother’s. The mental load is extraordinary. The mom guilt is real. The stories you’ve been told about what a “good mother” looks like are setting you up to feel like failure right from the hop.

But here’s the thing…

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Your life and your mental load, will feel more manageable if you’re cared for too.

I’m not saying that you should stop caring for your family.

I’m simply posing the question, what space might there be for you in the equation?

It’s not your family’s needs OR your needs…

It’s your family’s needs AND your needs.

I wonder what shifts you’d see in your life if you swapped that OR with AND?

Here is your gentle reminder to prioritize your mental health, especially at times when the world feels heavy.

Allow yourself to feel whatever it is that’s arising within you - anger, grief, sadness, fear, worry, anxiety, helplessness, confusion, numbness, exhaustion, disgust, isolation, disappointment, horror - it’s all valid and it’s all important.

And if you’re needing some ideas for where to even begin in caring for yourself, I shared some suggestions in this post.

We just got back from a dream vacation to Italy and all of a sudden, the lack of routine (+ jet-lag) hit me like a ton of bricks and that post-vacation bliss started to feel a bit like post-vacation stress…

And it got me thinking how there are SO many times when we “fall off the wagon” of our self care routines - vacations, sickness, an extra busy season of life… and all of a sudden self-care feels like another thing on the to-do list.

We’ve all been there.

So here’s a little guide to get BACK into a supportive routine, because we all need it and I promise it’s worth it!

💌 Lower your expectations & offer yourself self-compassion.

You’re NOT going to be able to jump back into everything, all at once. So let’s take that off the table right from the start. Self-criticism is the opposite of self-care so consider what it would sound like to first offer yourself a bit of self-compassion in this moment instead. Try something like “you’re feeling really overwhelmed, this feels so daunting” and take note of how it feels to interact with yourself that way.

🧘🏻‍♀️ Identify 1-3 habits you KNOW feel supportive.

After you’ve identified them, make a plan to begin ACTUALLY incorporating those things. It’s a lot easier to lean on habits than it is to lean on motivation, especially when you’re feeling overwhelmed. So start small and build trust with yourself to follow through.

✍🏼 Do a big brain dump of all the to do’s then choose 3 to focus on each day.

The act of simply getting all of the overwhelming “lists” out of our head and onto a piece of paper goes a long way in helping us conceptualize what needs to get done and begin taking action. Things in motion, stay in motion - so just start. But keep that list small and manageable otherwise you’ll find yourself more overwhelmed and discouraged.

Save this post for later and revisit it the next time you find yourself out of routine!

September brings with it a lot of change and trans

September brings with it a lot of change and transition. Back to routine, back to school, back to structure. Lots of GOOD things.

But transition is always a bit uncomfortable. And when we’re feeling a bit “behind” or overwhelmed, our minds and bodies need some extra care.
